Esta canção de 1961 foi escrita por Pete Seeger (versos 1 a 3) e Joe Hickerson (versos 4 e 5) é uma composição circular, isto é termina onde começa.

Pete Seeger (1919 – 2014) foi um influente músico, era da Banda “The Weavers” e escreveu outras músicas de sucesso, como “If I Had a Hammer”, também uma das minha preferidas. Foi também um dos mais importantes divulgadores da música: “We Shall Overcome”, o hino não oficial do movimento pelos Direitos Civis nos EUA.

Estes versos foram tirados de uma canção folclórica dos Cossacos, mencionada no romance de Mikhail Sholokhov (Prêmio Nobel de Literatura): “And Quiet Flows the Don” de 1934.

Trata-se de uma canção anti-guerra e mais que tudo anti-militarista. É uma canção simples e carinhosa, que revela as consequências de tudo que se relaciona a guerra:

1. As flores são colhidas por jovens moças
2. As moças se casam com jovens moços
3. Os jovens se tornam soldados
4. Os soldados acabam em túmulos
5. Nos túmulos nascem novas flores
